This is an English-Chinese translation report of news texts of South China Sea issue from media both in China and the United States from 2014 to 2017.The selected texts show the different expressions about South China Sea issue between China and America to enrich the study of translation strategies of Sino-US discourse and to offer readers a clear picture of Sino-US relations on that topic.The report is divided into four parts.It begins with a brief description of the translation task,including introduction to the source texts and background as well as the significance and organization of the report.Chapter Two is the process of translation,detailing the three translation stages,that is,preparation before translating,difficulties in translating and proofreading after translating.The third chapter,case study,is the application of the relevant functional grammar to the translation.The last chapter summarizes the report and presents the findings,limitations and suggestions.To be specific,the report is to analyze the translation of news texts of South China Sea issue at the lexical,clausal and text level.It is found that that functional grammar can be an effective theory for translation.Generally speaking,transitivity analysis provides translators with a valid way to tell the types of processes,to reveal their source meaning and to reproduce that meaning in the target text.Meanwhile,the translator can compare the differences between English and Chinese in modality,cohesion,and clause complexes with appropriate translation skills to obtain a coherent Chinese version.
