| It is known that listening is an important means for people to receive external information. As medical study results show, listening is an essential requirement for language acquisition. If one’s hearing is affected by a variety of ear diseases, the fine auditory stimulus signals can not be obtained as well as the daily language acquisition will be affected. Therefore, abnormal accent or learning difficulties may occur. To understand hearing loss better,we must first figure out the pathology of deafness. However, otology study in China is seriously lagged behind. At present, only few people do researches on the pathology of ear,and no foreign monograph has ever been translated into Chinese for people in need to read, which seriously hinders the development of clinical diagnosis and treatment technology for hearing loss diseases. This report is based on the translation project of original medical English work Pathology of the Ear which is published by Harvard University Eye and Ear Infirmary, the strongest performer in the study of pathology of ear leading the development of the field in recent 60 years. To begin with, the report briefly introduces the contents of original medical texts and features of language.Taking own translation practice into consideration, then the translator fully analyses the source text from three dimensions of lexical equivalence, syntactic equivalence and textual equivalence according to the functional equivalence theory put by Eugene Nida.On this basis, significant and difficult points of translation are clearly spell out, typical examples analyses are fully enumerated, and then related translation strategies are given accordingly. To achieve lexical equivalence, specialized medical dictionaries are utilized for professional vocabulary, including Latin and Greek vocabulary as well as amphibious words.Furthermore, some strategies including amplification, omission and transform of parts of speech are used in translation. As for syntactic equivalence,to deal with thedifferences of sentence structure between Chinese and English, the method of syntactic restructuring, namely change of voice, conversion and inversion, combination and division are highlighted. To textual equivalence,on one hand, the translator pay more attention to the identity of medical terminology translation as well as the coherence of contents;on the other hand, text layout and translation style are taken into consideration. It is confirmed by the study that the application of functional equivalence theory in the field of medical English translation is of certain reference value and practical significance. Moreover, publication of the classic’s translation will hopefully provide reliable evidence for clinical diagnosis and treatment, promote the development and progress of China’s ear science and technology, advance the Chinese foreign language learning ability, and enhance the comprehensive national strength as well as the international competitiveness. |
