The Spatial Writing And Identity Recognition Of Pai Hsien-yung's Novels

Identity issues is an important theme in the creation of Pai Hsien-yung,which had been studied by many scholars before.But there is a few people thinking about this subject in the perspective of space theory.In the fact,Pai Hsien-yung is a writer full of spatial consciousness.His experience of wandering in the childhood and his interests in describing spatial images all indicate that it is a feasible way to study his novels with the space theory which will provides me some total new ideas of thinking the identity issues in Pai Hsien-yung's novels.This article mainly contains five chapters.The first chapter is identity recognition-the important resource of tragic atmosphere in Pai-Hsien yung's novels.This chapter mainly analyses three identity confusions in Pai-Hsien yung's novels: ethnic and national identification,cultural identification,sexual identification.It also points out the connection between identity recognition and space,which together cause the tragic ending of Pai-Hsien yung;s novels.The chapter is the base of this whole article.The first chapter focuses on the geographic space.By analyzing the images of different cities of mainland of china,Taipei and American,we find out writer's rejection for Taipei and American.Besides,the way that Pai Hsien-yung thinks of characters' living space reflects his faith on identification of Chinese.The second chapter mainly analyze the confusion of American Chinese when they faced the two different cultures.Firstly,as to generation relationship,the cultural identification of the first American Chinese and the second American Chinese because of different living backgrounds,which causes collision between mother and daughter or father and son in the text.Secondly,different American Chinese has different attitudes towards western culture due to their living condition in America.And Pai Hsien-yung usually shows his shameless to those who abandon Chinese culture and embrace western culture.At last,Chinese culture are always under the situation of being consuming and watching.What Pai Hsien-yung usually do to change this situation is to deface the images of American people.The third chapter analyzes the body space and discusses the sex identification of homosexuals in his novels.This chapter based on the Pai Hsien-yung's homosexual novels,which analyses the how authority regulate them by limiting their activity space and body posture and how homosexuals fight with the authority by their body performance in order to a legal living space.The last chapter connects the third space theory and identity problems and tries to find an answer for Pai Hsien-yung's identification dilemma.Firstly,from the prospection of narrative,Pai Hsien-yung's writing itself reflects the third space theory,which mainly reflects on the mixture of language and the construction of third space.Besides,in Pai Hsien-yung's later writing,he tries to deconstruct the idea of “identification” buy seeking for a common sense of human being—love.And he tries to create a mixed identity situation—international citizen.
