Form And Connotation Of Neo-Folk Lyrics Since The New Century

Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize in literature in 2016,which is controversial,because it has not reached an agreement in the academic circle whether folk music and its lyrics belong to poetry and the literature or not.However,his award shows at least that poetic flavor exists in the excellent folk songs indeed.The neo-folk is a rising folk music after 2000,which has its own unique style,has developed rapidly since 2000,and owned a large number of fans.It mainly pays attention to the creation of lyrics and the emotion expression,and its lyrics have simple and unadorned emotion,hazy image,vague language,and unique language form and meaning;meanwhile,it mixes with lots of poetry elements,e.g.,the rhetoric devices of repeat and parallelism have been adopted in the lyrics to strengthen the feelings;sometimes many ancient or modern poetry are mixed into the song to enhance the poetic flavor.It is inclined for language of neo-folk lyrics to break through the routine to make the vague effect.These unique language features make the neo-folk lyrics closer to the poetry in form and have a poetic tendency.The singers of neo-folk mostly come from the bottom of the society,and the emotion neo-folk expresses is closer to the real life than the golden hits sung by pop stars through commercial packaging and those songs being popular in one night;therefore,neo-folk is more touching.It describes the ordinary life of little grassroots,which is their real expression for the life.The lyrics show their cynical outlet and a sense of wandering without refuge,and reveal the social problems and the publics' mind of this times.Few researchers pay attention to the neo-folk,which is one new form of music,and even if some scholars have focused on the lyrics of neo-folk,their studies only concern about the reviews through appreciation and analysis of the lyrics or the biographical comment of the neo-folk,and the literariness of the neo-folk lyrics has been ignored.As one sub-culture wandering in the edge of the mainstream culture,neo-folk's language is superficial and simple,which,however,mixes with some poetic rhetoric such as vagueness,parody,allegory etc.to make the lyrics form close to the poetry deliberately.On this basis,this paper selects some excellent neo-folk lyrics after 2000 to read and taste,so as to analyze the unique poetic form and emotional connotation of the neo-folk lyrics and try to explore the poetry and literariness contained by the neo-folk lyrics.
