| The selection of the topic is based on the following considerations: first of all,many scholars have studied it in various perspectives to prove the feasibility of the theory,since Adaptation Theory was put forward by Verschueren.These results have proven that adaptation theory is such a reliable theory that can be applied for explaining various linguistic phenomena.However,through reading literature,the author has found that very few researches have used the theory to study literary work,especially the dialogue.Therefore,the theoretical purpose of this thesis is to explore the feasibility of adaptation theory in the analysis of dialogues in literary works.It expects to enrich the application of adaptation theory in literary works.Secondly,the dialogue is a great important element in a novel.It is dialogue that help the writer to promote the plot and help readers have a good knowledge of characters.It is a good way for novelist to describe the characters.In thesis,we will focus on analyzing dialogues in A Thousand Splendid Suns from the perspective of adaptation theory.It aims to discuss the vital effects of dialogues in revealing the theme of the novel,deepening the plot development,and stimulating readers interest.Last but not least,A Thousand Splendid Suns is the second successful novel of Hosseini.Since the publication,the book has aroused great attention from many scholars and readers,which results in many researches on it.Among all the articles and papers,very few scholars have analyzed it from the perspective of linguistics,especially Adaptation Theory.Thus,this thesis aims at analyzing how characters’ linguistic choices adapt to the mental world,social world and physical world.The practical significance of this thesis is to provide a new view to interpret and appreciate novels.Research shows that it is verified that Adaptation Theory is feasible and reliable to analyze and interpret dialogues.Adaptation Theory has a powerful explanatory power to dialogue.The adaptation theory integrate the social,mental,physical elements into the study of pragmatics,which is a more synthetic way than previous studies on dialogues,and it also help reader to understand the theme of the novel better.Also,we have found in the study that characters’ linguistic choices are all interadaptable with the three worldof contextual correlates.We seem to feel that characters come to life from the novel in the process of analyzing.There are both theoretical and practical value in this thesis.Theoretically,the thesis can expand the view of linguistic study and enlarge the range of studies on literary language use.Practically,as one of Hosseini’s successful works,A Thousand Splendid Suns has attracted studies from linguistic and literary perspectives at both home and abroad.However,the research from the view of adaptation theory can help readers better comprehend and appreciate the personalities of each character in this famous novel. |
