Vocabulary is always a problem for English learners.The same word has different meanings and usages in different contexts.Especially for prepositions,although they are functional words,their usage and meaning are variable.But in traditional class,the teachers tell the students that the usage,the meanings of a preposition are conventional and do not pay attention to the connection of every morpheme.Therefore the students always remember these prepositions automatically,leading to the facts that the students are deeply stressed and they feel miserable.Thus,it is an impending problem to find a teaching method that has positive influence on English polysemous preposition teaching and learning.According to cognitive linguistic scholars,an image schema is recurring,dynamic pattern of our perceptual interactions that give coherence and structure to our experience.Image schema is widely used in cognitive linguistic,which plays an important role in preposition using.This paper takes the image schema as the theoretical basis,and the teaching of polysemous preposition in high school as the point,taking about the teaching of OVER as an example,so as to verify that whether the application of image schema theory in polysemous preposition teaching can improve the senior students‘ academic performance and learning efficiency,and whether the application of image schema theory in polysemous preposition teaching can increase the senior students‘ learning interest.This research is conducted by selecting from two classes of grade 2 in a senior middle school of Harbin City.One is experimental class and the other is control class.We take the polysemous preposition teaching experiment based on the image schema theory for one semester in experimental class while the traditional teaching method in control class and then analysis the collected data.the analysis shows that the scores in the experimental class is superior to the control class and the students are fond of the new teaching method.Moreover the image schema theory can raise the students‘ interest in learning polysemous preposition and help the students learn the polysemous preposition effectively.
