As the basis of language learning, vocabulary plays an important role in secondary vocational school students' English learning. How to effectively improve students' English vocabulary acquisition has attracted English teachers' more and more attention.Learning vocabulary incidentally through extensive reading is consistently considered as an important approach for language learners to expand their English vocabulary, but there are still many factors which may have an influence on the results of English incidental vocabulary acquisition(IVA),among them, cognitive style,as an important factor, has been neglected by researchers to a large extent.Only by disclosing the relationship between secondary vocational school students' cognitive style and IVA,will English teachers realize the effect of cognitive styles on secondary vocational school students' English IVA.This study adopts quantitative and qualitative methods, and aims to probe the correlation between secondary vocational school students' cognitive style and IVA,and explores the effects of different cognitive styles on secondary vocational school students' IVA so as to discover the approach which can help vocational school students learn and memorize English vocabulary effectively. In order to achieve the purpose, this research focuses on the following questions:(1)what is the general situation of secondary vocational school student's cognitive style?(2)What is the correlation between secondary vocational school student's cognitive style and their performances in IVA?(3)What is the effect of the exposure frequency of target vocabulary on the correlation between cognitive style and IVA?This study adopts the methods of tests and interview, and selects two parallel classes of 78 students from Dalian Art School in Dalian city as research subjects so as to analyze the correlation between secondary vocational school students' cognitive style and English IVA.Firstly, the Group Embedded Figure Test is used to investigate the subjects' cognitive style.Next, the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale is used to indicate the subjects' vocabulary knowledge gain of target words. Finally, this study adopts Excel to analyze and deal with the data collected by the experiment, and uses SPSS20.0 to make descriptive analysis,independent-samples T test and correlation analysis according to the related data, and eventually makes a discussion about the results of experiment. The results of the research reveal that the overall cognitive style of secondary vocational school students is FD.There is an obvious positive correlation between secondary vocational school student's FI and English IVA,in other words, the amount of gained knowledge is correlated with the extent of FI.Besides, the exposure frequency of target words has a significant effect on this correlation, that is,this correlation is much stronger for the target words with a low exposure frequency in the reading material than for those with a high exposure frequency. Finally, the research proposes some practical suggestions for education departments and English teachers about the instruction of vocabulary learning strategies and the training of cognitive strategies for secondary vocational school students.Besides, this research is expected to provide some valuable references for further study.
