Hole,in a broad sense,is a spatial structure consisting of surrounding entities and an empty space in the centre. It exists extensively in all stages and genres of art. However, this subject hasn' t been studied systematically by the profession. In this paper i attempt to use "hole”as a clue by extracting it out of different art genres. The research methods used in my study include:literature research, qualitative analysis and case study. My paper proceeds by studying different forms of hole in five art genres including painting, sculpture, architecture, artifact, and installation.Through study, this paper is aimed on an holistic interpretation of the artistic conversion of hole in art works. It can be concluded as four aspects:First,a hole can change the relationship between spaces and promote the revolution of art forms;Second,a hole exists as a channel for the conversion from material movement to its spiritual aspect;Third,a hole stimulates the desire of peep and touch, and establishes our existence in the world and the relationship between us and others;Forth,a hole exists as a conflicting unity of openness and obstruction, light and darkness, focus and blur, which will lead to the symbolism theme such as desire and truth. In my study, the hole is not only the object, but also a clue to discuss art space. This study will help to establish a more comprehensive interpretation of the spatial forms by philosophy, visual perception, and psychology, and provide a new perspective for the study on art space in the future.
