"Chinese-style(popular)music"has been an emergent musical style(genre)prevailing in the Mando-pop world since the 21st century. Its artistic features can be summarized as the "juxtaposition of classical(archaistic/nostalgic)and modern(popular)styles",with the extraordinary elegance and classicism. The lyrics of"Chinese-style"music tend to combine different segments of classical works of Chinese literature(especially poetry)together and employ literary allusions well, with a strong"Chinese flavor"and profound cultural implications, which can be regarded as an extension of China's unique "aesthetic state"and in turn has certain value for academic research and text analysis. The greatest value of“Chinese-style"lyrics lies in the modernization of traditional Chinese culture and the recurrence of its artistic conception, which is considered as the appeal and adaptation to its own culture.Although there are many current studies that have covered nearly all aspects of"Chinese-style"music,the corpus-based and in-depth linguistic and cultural research on the discourse of "Chinese-style" lyrics is still hardly seen.Furthermore, very little attention so far has been paid to this special genre of popular music from the theoretical perspective of language and culture communication.Based on previous studies, this thesis mainly adopts the corpus-based approach and the method of induction to analyze the corpora of "Chinese-style"lyrics collected throughout the past 40 years. The thesis describes the general linguistic features of this type of lyrics and explores the cultural connotations embedded in it.It also discusses the modalities of the inner cultural inheritance of "Chinese-style"lyrics.In this way,it provides reference and guidance for appreciation and production of such kind of music. On this basis, this thesis figures out possible reasons for the popularity of"Chinese-style"lyrics from the perspective of"audience reception"in the context of language and culture communication, and brings forward several strategies and suggestions towards the patterns and ways of intercultural communication as well,in order to attract more attention in academia to the research on this particular cultural phenomenon regarding"Chinese-style"popular music. In terms of linguistics of lyrics, the thesis eventually finds that"Chinese-style"lyrics are characterized by the'"harmony of rhymes, tonal patterns and rhythm",the"juxtaposition of different linguistic styles(classical vs.moden;archaistic vs.popular;Chinese vs.Western)",and their extremely well-proportioned sentence structures, through an overall analysis of'"Chinese-style"lyrics'art of prosody(prosody),flexible use of grammar(syntax),stylistic characteristics(stylistics)and rhetorical devices(rhetoric). In terms of cultural studies of lyrics,a whole series of;"cultural symbols(systems)"represented by"Chinese elements" can be considered as the most significant:"imagery representation"of "Chinese-style"lyrics,which not only fully embodies the textual style of"Chinese-style"music,but also expresses the implications and connotations of the lyrics, and even reflects underlying social and cultural psychology.Moreover,"Chinese-style"lyrics have relatively steady mechanisms of symbol generating and mental mechanisms of symbol selection.Currently,those"Chinese-style" symbols should be able to form the nucleus in the chain of their related cultural industry. In addition, from the modality of cultural inheritance, these collected lyrics can also be classified as "maintaining the classical appearance","mixing classical styles with modern ones",and?adapting old forms for the new use".In terms of language and culture communication, this thesis explores possible reasons for the popularity of"Chinese-style”lyrics,from both the "external conditions"(including social contexts, cultural experience and cultural cognition)and the"internal psychology"(including intuitive feelings, emotional resonance and imagination)of-the"audience reception".Besides, the"path of popular culture"and the"mechanism of cross-border communication"of"Chinese-style"lyrics have been summarized.Suggestions towards the improvement of patterns of intercultural communication of"Chinese-style"lyrics especially in the popular context have been proposed as well. Finally, the greatest innovation point of this thesis lies in its concentration on the theoretical as well as practical interactions between music, linguistics, literature, culture and communication, from only a common phenomenon within the field of popular culture.
