The resultative adverbial conjunctions(ACs)zhongyu(??),zhongjiu(??),zongsuan(??)in Chinese and finally,at last,in the end in English are widely used in oral and written language. In the process of using them, there are slight differences in syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects. On the basis of relevant researches, the thesis makes a comparative study from the perspectives of syntactics, semantics and pragmatics, aiming to explore the similarities and differences of these six resultative adverbial conjunctions, especially the comparative study of zhongyu(??)and finally. The corpus of the thesis is collected from the equal number of texts from modern and contemporary novels in Chinese and English. The thesis makes a quantitative analysis of the syntactic distributions of resultative adverbial conjunctions in Chinese and English, and makes a qualitative analysis of their semantic relations and pragmatic features in forms.Besides, the comparative method is also used in the thesis, summarizing their similarities and differences in usage, and also pointing out the limitations of the study and suggestions for improvement.Through the analysis,it is found that there are similarities and differences in syntactic distributions, semantic features and pragmatic features of resultative adverbial conjunctions. The main findings are as follows:(1)in terms of syntactic distributions, the syntactic distributions of resultative adverbial conjunctions in Chinese are restrictive, and generally appear at the beginning of the sentence or in the middle of the sentence, while the syntactic distributions of resultative adverbial conjunctions in English are relatively flexible, which usually appear in front of other adverbs, and can also appear at the end of the sentence;(2)in terms of semantic features, resultative adverbial conjunctions in Chinese have the feature of dynamics, and they can summarize the previous information and lead to results, while resultative adverbial conjunctions in English generalize the previous information and have the feature of objectivity;(3)in terms of pragmatic features, resultative adverbial conjunctions in Chinese have the features of positive emphasis and negative emphasis, and also have the meaning of evaluation, while resultative adverbial conjunctions in English generally have the feature of information focus, and are intended for communication.Through the study, the thesis aims to study the universalities and individualities of the usage of resultative adverbial conjunctions in Chinese and English,to make a comparative analysis of the reference situation of them, and to explore the potential semantic expressions on the basis of the text.
