And the Mountains Echoed is the novel written by the famous Afghan-American writer Khaled Hosseini. The novel revolves around Abdullah and the Pari brothers and sisters in the first person narrative, consisting of nine short stories, the novel tells about the joys and sorrows of the two brothers and sisters caused by poverty and war and the different characters around them. This paper selects the three typical characters such as Abdullah,Nila and Pari in the novel, and uses the trauma theory to analyze the traumatic narrative of And the Mountains Echoed. This thesis consists of three parts. In the first part, the novel focuses on Abdullah to study the family trauma.Abdullah lived in a poor and broken family. His mother died since childhood. His stepmother was indifferent and even cold.He and his sister Pari were dependent on each other and were close to each other. He saw her sister as a continuation of her mother, but her sister Pari was sold by her father.Far away, the family trauma allowed Abdullah to try to find the warmth of the family. When he had children,he used the name of his sister Pari as his daughter's name, and repaired the family trauma by telling her childhood experiences and stories. But when he reunited with his sister,Pali, decades later,Abdullah could no longer remember Pari because of illness. In the second part, the novel focuses on Nila to study the gender trauma of the novel.Under the influence of gender identity consciousness,Nila was not concerned by her father since childhood. When she grew up,her talent and personality were regarded as different in the secular society. She tried to find comfort in the marriage life and was suppressed by the traditional concept of marriage to demonstrate gender awareness.Nila fights the secular with rebellion and depravity.Gender trauma allowed Nila's life to circle in tragedy.Eventually Nila ended her life with suicide. In the third part, the novel studies cultural trauma with Pari as the center.Pari was brought to France by her adoptive mother, but the cultural conflict once caused Pari's growth to lose its direction. After knowing her own life experience,Pari embarked on the road to find roots and finally returned. In And the Mountains Echoed Khaled Hosseini show us the war and poverty caused by the human trauma, and show the human struggle against the inevitable trauma, and the efforts made to heal the trauma.Through trauma writing,Khaled Hosseini revealed the universality of trauma, and also triggered readers to focus on trauma, thinking about how to restore trauma and create a better life.
