Grammar teaching plays an essential role in English teaching in our country.Traditional grammar teaching methods focuses on the explanation of rules.As a result,students become less interested in it.However,grammar teaching not only helps students master grammar rules accurately,but also helps them communicate properly.With the rapid development of modern information technology,multimodal theory has emerged.Multimodality refers to a communication combined with various semiotics such as vision and other kinds of auditory channels.In multimodal teaching,it emphasizes on using multiple symbolic modes(pictures,music,video,etc.)to stimulate students' various senses,so as to mobilize students' interests and enable them to enhance their learning effect.Based on multimodal theory and previous researches,this research mainly discusses the following two questions:Research Question 1: In what way can the multimodal English grammar teaching stimulate students' interests? Research Question 2: To what degree can the multimodal English grammar teaching improve students' English grammar achievements?In this research,two parallel classes in Grade Two of XiGu middle school in Taiyuan were taken as the experimental subjects.The author conducted a pre-questionnaire in the experimental class to investigate the current situation of English grammar learning in the junior middle school.Students in two classes were given a grammar test as the pre-test and the scores indicated that there were no distinctive differences between them.After that,multimodal grammar teaching was carried out in the experimental class and the traditional grammar teaching method was adopted in the control class.After ten-week experiment,students in two classes took a second grammar test.Then the students in the experimental class were asked to fill in a post-questionnaire.Independent Samples T-test and Paired Samples T-test in SPSS 17.0 were used to analyze the results.According to the analysis of scores and results,it can be concluded that applying multimodal grammar teaching stimulated students' interests,enhanced their confidence and improved their motivation to learn grammar.It also aroused the students' enthusiasm in English grammar learning.Students' English grammar achievements have improved obviously,and their grammar competence have been enhanced.
