The development of science promotes the way of communication in information technology and gives birth to the multimodal theory,which gains more and more focus and then be applied to the language teaching.Nowadays,most researches on language teaching based on multimodal theory are about vocabulary and reading teaching.English grammar is the focus and basis of English language teaching in middle school.However,the current grammar teaching is mainly used the traditional way,making students feel dull and lose interests.Therefore,this research combines the multimodal theory and English grammar teaching to construct Multimodal Grammar Teaching Method.And the purpose is to make the comparison between multimodal grammar teaching and traditional grammar teaching.The specific research questions are as follows:1 How does the multimodal grammar teaching influence students' mastery of grammar form?2.How does the multimodal grammar teaching influence students'mastery of the meanings of grammar?3.How does the multimodal grammar teaching influence students' use of grammar?The study is carried out in junior middle school in Nanjing.71 students in the second grade of junior middle school from two classes have similar English proficiency One class is arranged as the experimental class which is taught by Multimodal Grammar Teaching Method and the other one is arranged as the control class which is taught by grammar translation method.The teaching content is the comparative and superlative of adjectives and adverbs and the whole experiment lasts four weeks.At first,students takes part in the pre-test paper.Then,a pre-questionnaire is conducted to investigate their current grammar learning situation.After two weeks' grammar learning taught by different teaching methods,students participates in the post-test and oral test.In the last week,students in the experimental class accept the post-questionnaire and interview.The scores in tests and results of questionnaires and interview are recorded,analyzed and discussed.The results show that compared with traditional grammar teaching method,Multimodal Grammar Teaching Method has no advantage over grammar form and meaning but has great advantages over grammar use.According to the results,multimodal grammar teaching is beneficial to cultivate students' flexible use of grammatical rules.As for the mastery of grammar form and meaning,teachers should combine multimodal method with traditional way based on students' learning situation to achieve a better teaching effect.At the same time,Multimodal Grammar Teaching Method helps students build up self-confidence,develop learning strategies and create lively class atmosphere.That is to say,Multimodal Grammar Teaching Method makes the grammar class more efficient and should be applied in the future.
