At present,Yoshimoto Banana has published 49 novels,26 of which have been translated into Chinese.21 of the 26 novels involve the descriptions of the dreams.Yoshimoto Banana attaches great importance to the power of the dreams,and the dreams have become an important source of her literary creation.This thesis takes the dreams in the novel of Yoshimoto Banana as the research object,and takes the narrative time and space as an approach of study.Combining the narrative theory with Freud's interpretation of the dreams,this thesis discusses and analyzes dreams of Yoshimoto Banana's novel.The paper is divided into four parts: The introduction briefly describes the research status of the dreams in Yoshimoto Banana's works.The first chapter analyzes the time function in the dreams.The time of dream plays a role of “flashback” and “pre-flash”.At the same time,dream time can be parallel to current time.The second chapter studies the spatial combination of the dreams.It analyzes three combination modes of the dreams: the box mode,the bead mode,and the buckle mode.The different combinations of the dreams in the novel shape a variety of narrative forms.The third chapter focuses on the artistic function of dream time and space.The dream is a representation of the dreamer's inner world,revealing the true inner world of the character and rewriting the reality.In the dreams of Yoshimoto Banana's novels,the boundary between life and death has been blurred.Yoshimoto Banana has created a group of deceased characters in the dreams,and they play an important part in expressing the theme of the story.
