Interest is a cognitive tendency with positive emotions.It is also the most active factor in motivation to promote individuals to understand things and explore truth.Nowadays,interest in learning has gradually become a topic of concern to educators,and its field has always regarded interest development as an objective law of development.At the same time,with the deepening of the study of interest in learning,educators began to focus on different disciplines.In order to adapt to the development of the society,English education has received great attention.China has opened an English course from the third grade of primary school.Although schools and parents are enthusiastic about the development of pupils' English learning,recent studies have found that pupils' interest in learning is not optimistic.As the grades rise,the difficulty of learning gradually increases,and many pupils' interest in learning decreases sharply,which eventually leads to a decline in academic performance and even a feeling of disgusting.Effective English teaching in primary school is to increase pupils' interest in English learning,stimulate learning motivation,establish confidence in learning English,and lay a solid foundation for later secondary school learning.It can be seen that learning interest plays an important role in the initial stage of pupils' English learning.Story teaching method is a common teaching method at present,and it is also an effective teaching method of English teaching in primary school.The story teaching method is based on the teaching content,designing the language situation,and a relatively complete story runs through the classroom.The pupils are immersed in the practice of words,sentence patterns and texts,which fully reflects the principle of“ English for fun ”.The story teaching method is conducive to creating a strong learning atmosphere based on the establishment of a good teacher-student relationship,in line with the pupils' age and psychological characteristics,and greatly stimulates and enhances the interest in English learning.Based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literatures,this study conducts experimental research.According to the four-stage theory of interest development by Hidi and Renninger,this paper investigates the stimulation,maintenance and change of personal interest in the experimental class and the control class.The results show that story teaching method can stimulate pupils' situational interest in English class and promote transformation to their individual interest in English learning.Based on the four-stage theory of interest development and the three-stage model of interest development,this paper puts forward some teaching suggestions on the effective application of English story teaching method in elementary school from three aspects:stimulating situational interest in English class,maintaining situational interest in English class and forming and developing individual interest.It can be used as a reference for teachers to cultivate pupils' interest in English learning through teaching methods and means.
