A Study On The Stylistic Differences Of Medieval Chinese Language Conjunction

The internal chapter of Bao Puzi,Shenxianzhuan and Zhouhou Emergency Prescription are valuable corpus for the study of middlle Chinese,The internal chapter of Bao Puzi use the method of comment to clarify the author's point of view,The Shenxianzhuan use the narrative way to narrate the fairy tale,The Zhouhou Emergency Prescription use descriptive expressions to introduce ways to treat diseases.They are close to the spoken language at that time.This paper,from the stylistic perspective,makes a statistical analysis of the connectives in the three literatures in order to reveal the different usages of the connectives in different styles.Firstly,In terms of meaning and grammatical function,we mainly define and classify conjunctions into ten categories of The Internal Chapter of Bao Puzi,Shenxianzhuan and Zhouhou Emergency Prescription: coordinating conjunction,continuing conjunction,progressive conjunction,alternative conjunction,hypothetical conjunction,causal conjunction,adversative conjunction,concessive conjunction,conditional conjunction andobjective conjunction.Secondly,this paper classifies and describes 172 conjunctions in The Internal ChaPter of Bao Puzi,Shenxianzhuan and Zhouhou Emergency Prescription by qualitative and quantitative methods,and Outlines the overall appearance of conjunctions in the three literatures on the basis of comparison and analysis.Finally,we conclude that the difference in the distribution of connectives in The Internal Chapter of Bao Puzi,Shenxianzhuan and Zhouhou Emergency Prescription is closely related to the style.It is mainly manifested in the fact that argumentative style pays attention to the elucidations of reasoning,which is based on facts or reasoning,with logic as the main line.Argumentative style has the characteristics of argumentation,logic and rationality,so the frequency of using causal connectors in argumentative style is higher than other styles.Narrative style focuses on narration,which is a kind of style to tell the context of things.Narrative style has the characteristics of event,process,continuity of time and behavior,etc,so continuing conjunction takes a large proportion of connectives in narrative style.
