Thomas Clayton Wolfe is a far-reaching American writer.He is the representative writer to the lost generation and the idol of the beat generation.Look Homeward,Angel is his debut and classics.This book made him one of the best writer in America.He got the important position as well.Meanwhile,it laid the tone of his works in the rest of his creation that was the pursuit of theme.We can see the quest of theme in his full-length novels like Time and River,The Web and the Rock and You Can't Go Home Again.It also shows in his collections as From Death to Morning and The Hills Beyond.The author made a in-depth study and detailed analysis of the quest motif in this essay by reading up Look Homeward,Angel and combining with the theory of narratology and thematic and the life experience of Wolfe.The author try his best to exactly hold the quest motif in Wolfe's works in order to fully realize Wolfe's lifetime,create motivation and ideology.This paper is mainly divided into three parts: introduction,body and conclusion.The introduction reviews Wolfe's research at home and abroad in detail.The first chapter discusses the origin,development and evolution of the theme "pursuit" in west.The theme in western literature originates from the Greek and Hebrew literary tradition,and its connotation is greatly enriched after the development of Medieval,Renaissance,Enlightenment,Romanticism and Realism literature.The United States has had the tradition of pursuit since the Revolutionary War,and its meaning and content have new development and extension after the Westward Movement,the Civil War,the world wars and other major historical periods.The pursuit of national independence,the powerful country and the cultural independence is the main content.The second chapter discusses the author's pursuit complex.From the aspects of lonely family atmosphere,distorted living environment,declining social development and strong patriotic emotion,this paper expounds the root of the author's "pursuit" complex.At the same time,it talks about the embodiment of the "pursuit" complex from the aspects of self-exaltation,eulogy of nature and democracy,pursuit of time and yearning for the paradise of existence.The third chapter presents of the theme of "pursuit" and the reasons for the occurrence of "pursuit".In the work,It is the specific presentation of the theme to pursuit missing maternal and paternal love,the way to realize the value of individual life,lost divinity and poetic home.The main causes of the pursuit are the extreme objectification of human beings,distortion of family affection and occlusion of communication language.The fourth chapter analyzes the narrative mode and reason of the theme.According to the their life experience of in the works,the pursuit process of the characters Eugene,Gantt,Eliza and Helen is summarized and sorted out.Although the pursuit process of each character is quite different and the result is different,no one's pursuit is smooth and tit is full of ups and downs.This paper makes an in-depth analysis of the pursuit mode by using the theory of narratology.The power of memory,game,compensationand character is main reasons to promote the narration.Chapter Five To discuss the implicitly cultural value of questing the theme in this book from three aspects: the life awareness,the naturalistic democracy and the quest of paradise.It's not difficult to find that the core which closely focused on the quest is about human survival and development.The author tries to find the harmonious way to genteher with among the individual,themselves,the others and society.
