In junior high school,English reading teaching is considered to be the most important part because reading is the key to judging whether or not students master a foreign language.Teachers have been paying close attention to the cultivation of students' reading ability.However,although various reading teaching methods are discussed on different occasions and are encouraged to be used in reading classes,yet in many schools,reading teaching still focuses on vocabulary,grammar and sentence structures,ignoring discourse analysis and text comprehension.This method restricts the development of students' discourse comprehension ability.The author believes that the use of cohesion theory to guide junior high school English reading teaching is an operable way to effectively improve students' reading ability.The key problems to be solved in this paper are: 1.What is the effect of the application of discourse cohesion strategy in junior high school English reading teaching in improving students' text comprehension ability? 2.What types of learners are more effective at using discourse cohesion strategies?Through interviews and questionnaires,the author finds some problems of the current situation of junior middle school English reading.By analyzing these problems,the author applies discourse cohesion theory to the teaching of English reading,puts forward specific teaching strategies,and carries out teaching experiments.Before the experiment,the author did the reading test and selected two classes whose reading level was basically equal.The author divided the two into experimental class and control class.In the experiment,cohesion theory was used to guide reading teaching,while in the experimental class,discourse cohesion was implemented with step-by-step training and classroom teaching practice.The control class still adopted the original reading teaching method,that is,vocabulary and grammar teaching.After the experiment,the author conducts a reading test and makes a comparative analysis of the two test data.Comparing the students' reading ability,such as guessing the meaning of words,summarizing,reasoning,judging and expressing subjective opinions,the author finds that the cohesion strategy in junior middle school English reading teaching can effectively improve students' reading ability.Finally,the author puts forward the limitations of the experiment because of the small sample size and personal theoretical level.The author also discusses the influence and significance of this research on English reading teaching,and proposes the direction of future efforts.
