An Investigation On English Reading Obstacles Of Rural Junior High School Students

With the rapid development and progress of society,the number of rural junior high schools is decreasing year by year,and the number is getting smaller and smaller,but a certain number of rural junior high schools still exist.In the practical teaching of rural junior high schools,the author finds that students’ English reading obstacles seriously affect their English learning.In view of this,the author chooses three rural junior high schools in my hometown as the research object,and explores the following questions:(1)what are the main English reading obstacles of rural junior high school students?(2)whether there are gender differences in English reading obstacles of rural junior high school students?(3)what are the causes of English reading obstacles of rural junior high school students? On this basis,this paper puts forward corresponding countermeasures for the current teaching and learning of English reading in rural junior high schools.On the basis of summarizing the previous research results on reading obstacles,this study conducted a survey in three rural junior high schools in my hometown by means of questionnaires and interviews.In this study,a total of 375 students were surveyed in 9 classes of parallel classes of each grade in each school,and 9 students and 6 teachers were randomly selected for interviews and records.The data collected in this study were analyzed by IBM SPSS Statistics 23 and EXCEL.Research findings of this paper:1.There are two obstacles in English reading of rural junior high school students: linguistic obstacles and non-linguistic obstacles.Among them,language obstacles are mainly manifested in the lack of vocabulary,weak grasp of grammatical knowledge,inability to grasp the whole text,and distinguish literary form difficultly.Non-linguistic obstacles are manifested as lack of cultural background knowledge,weak reading motivation,bad reading habits,and incorrect use of reading strategies.2.There are significant differences between rural junior high school students’ English reading obstacles and gender.In terms of lexical and syntactic obstacles,male students have more reading obstacles than female students.In terms of other obstacles,male and female students have the same degree of reading obstacles.3.The causes of rural junior high school students’ English reading obstacles are mainly caused by their learning situation and the current teaching conditions.4.In terms of teaching countermeasures,the paper starts from the two perspectives of teachers and students.This paper puts forward six strategies for students to learn:(1)Memorizing vocabulary scientifically and mastering memory methods.(2)Stabilizing grammar foundation and learning to analyze complex and long difficult sentences.(3)Grasping discourse as a whole and breaking through stylistic limitations.(4)Expanding extracurricular reading and increasing the input of background cultural knowledge.(5)Stimulating correct reading motivation and cultivating good reading habits.(6)Mastering reading strategies and learning to use them correctly.It also puts forward five countermeasures for teachers’ teaching from five aspects:(1)Adapting effective teaching mode according to local conditions.(2)Identifying teaching focus and guiding students to read independently.(3)Improving the importance of non-linguistic factors and making effective use of reading resources.(4)According to gender differences,making reasonable teaching methods.(5)Changing teaching concepts and paying attention to the development of their own quality.Through the study of rural junior high school students’ English reading obstacles,this paper tries to provide reference for improving rural junior high school students’ English reading ability and the English teaching transformation,and for more scholars and teachers who are interested in paying attention to and participating in rural education reform.
