Relative clause(another name of "attributive clause")is a common but complex grammatical phenomenon.English relative clauses themselves are long and some of them contain other subordinate clauses, making them difficult to understand.Besides, relative clauses not only serve as attributives but also have other functions and meanings. Finally, relative clause is a grammatical structure which cannot be found in Chinese and is different from "??" in Chinese. Therefore, the translation of English relative clause into Chinese is an issue worth discussing. The author chose The Jews of Medieval Western Christendom-a religious historical text-as the source text.In this book, there are numerous relative clauses, which are used to conduct research on the translation of English relative clauses.Translating these relative clauses faithfully and correctly is a major challenge for the author. The author mainly translated Chapter 7,collected all relative clauses in Chapter 7 and their translated texts. In reference to Peng Ping,Jin Wei,Sun Zhili and other scholars' studies on translating English relative clauses, the author put forward four translation methods based on the characteristics of relative clauses:translating into a prepositional modifier;translating into a coordinated clause;translating into an independent clause;translating into an adverbial clause.Relative clauses of English, which are complicated in structure, could be divided into several categories. When translating relative clauses, authors should find out the internal logic, analyze the structure and adhere to Chinese grammar so as to present reasonable target texts.
