Reading is a very important part in the English learning.Reading can enlarge students' vocabulary and cultivate students' language sense. For the junior middle school students, they have the pressure of entrance examination.Reading occupies a large proportion in the entrance examination. So many middle school teachers attach great importance to reading. In the English curriculum standard, there are clear requirements for the students' reading abilities from level one to level five. The fifth level is the requirement that the students should reach at the end of Grade Nine.Refer to this requirement, the author finds that most students can't reach the goal. The author does a long time of investigation for the reasons. One of the main reasons that can't be ignored is that the students are different in many aspects especially the reading abilities. As a result, the teachers need to seek a reading teaching method that can take students' differences into consideration. The stratified teaching is a teaching method that is designed on the basis of students' differences. In this research, the author aims to explore whether the stratified teaching can improve junior middle school students' reading abilities. If yes, which students in the three levels can make the most progress. The author uses two tests namely pre-test and post-test as the research instruments. They are from the reading sections of the English tests in the final exams and made by the authority. The author chooses the students in Class one and Class two,Grade Eight,as the subjects.Through the pretest, the author finds that there is no significant difference between the students' reading scores in the experimental class and the control class. At the same time, the students' numbers and the sex ratio are also equal. In the process of teaching, the author does the stratified teaching in the experimental class and the traditional “one-size-fits-all” teaching method in the control class. After a semester's experiment, the author also does the post-test.Through the analysis of students' reading scores with the SPSS17,the author finds that the students' average score in the experiment class is much higher than that in the control class. Then the author analyzes the scores of the students in the three levels in the experiment class in the pretest and post-test.The analysis shows that the students in level C make the most progress. Then the students in level A make more progress. At last the students in level B make the least progress. Then the author analyzes the reasons for the results and gives the effective suggestions for the teachers' teaching and students' learning. This research proves that stratified teaching can adapt to the English reading teaching.
