Kazuo Ishiguro,a famous Japanese-born British novelist, won the Nobel Prize for literature in 2017.His works have received great praise since published. His sixth novel Never Let Me Go describes the story of clones and humans in the specific society where cloning technique is well developed.Cloning issues have attracted much attention in the society. However, only a few scholars studied Never Let Me Go from the perspective of ethics. On the basis of Ethical Literary Criticism theory, this thesis attempts to analyze the irrational ethical choices, explore the consequences of the choices, and thus illustrate the significance of the novel.Human beings mainly regard clones as organ provides in the novel. Some of them seek to testify clones have the same souls as humans. However, the abnormal ethical environment prevents clones from constructing an ethical consciousness and realizing their ethical identity, which results in making clones be obedient and submissive. Therefore, humans and clones face various predicaments in the specific environment.Meanwhile, this thesis summaries other dilemmas of humans and clones both in the novel and in reality, hoping to encourage readers to rethink about the clone issues. For the further study of clone issues, this thesis concludes that clones face the dilemmas of emotion, relationship, right and self-cognition for their complicated identity.Humans have no right to clone humans casually. It is necessary to manage the relationship between humans and clones, deal with the disabled clones, keep male-female ratio in balance and guarantee the species diversity. What’s more, the thesis also hopes humans stop hurting clones casually for their own benefits, and give some solutions to the predicaments. |
