Sight translation(ST)is an important mode of interpreting. It has attracted growing scholarly attention and research methods are found in a variety. The visual input of ST includes text and diagrams, and this thesis presents empirical studies on diagram ST.To enhance the scientific merits and validity of the research, the author designed two experiments: behavioral test and eye-tracking experiment. The former involves a larger sample size to explain the reading behavior difference between two groups. And the latter expands on the behavioral test and focus on combing eye movement data with speech analysis to answer research questions. This study mainly discusses 3 questions. In diagram ST,1)Are there any differences between advanced learners and intermediate learners in terms of speed, accuracy and fluency? 2)If there are differences, what are the possible reasons? 3)What are the differences between advanced learners and intermediate learners in terms of cognitive load and output production? The behavioral and eye-tracking data are processed by SVM and SPSS and they both echoes each other, showing that there are differences in diagram ST between learners of different ST levels.Firstly, advanced learners process diagrams with higher speed and quality. It is related to their difference both in observing trajectory of the diagrams and priority when rendering the speeches.Secondly, advanced learners invest less cognitive load when sight translating diagrams. The cognitive load caused by different diagram types is also different.Based on the findings, the author has found several features and difficulties of diagrams ST and sheds some light on both sight translation training and practice.
