This thesis aims to study the textual interference factor in sight translation by integrating performance analysis with eye tracking evidence, and sets out to discuss three questions in general.First, will eye data, which reflect subjects' cognitive activity, support conclusions derived from conventional speech analysis? Second,do syntactic order discrepancies between English and Chinese bring interference to English-Chinese sight translation? Third, what are the differences between advanced sight translators and less advanced ones in terms of cognitive activity and speech production during ST? In other words, what makes a good sight translator? This thesis presents results of an eye-tracking-backed experiment and an analysis of data obtained from the experiment. The results of experimental data and analysis show that conclusions derived from eye movement data support the results of speech analysis, that the two measurements, one process-oriented and one product-oriented,shows good compatibility in this study. Also, language order discrepancies do cause interference to sight translators during English-Chinese sight translation. And compared to less advanced sight translators, advanced ones demonstrate more skillful sight translation techniques with less cognitive processing strain. In the end, this thesis also acknowledges the limitations of this empirical study and suggests ideas for future studies.
