| Gothic literature is featured with unique charm.Among the famous British and American writers,many of them combined Gothic characters in their creation.Edgar Allan Poe was an outstanding representative.He had created a large number of classic works in his short life,among which the Gothic short stories were undoubtedly the pearl on the crown.Deeply influenced by the Gothic traditions and American social background,Allen Poe optimized language expressions,character portraying,plot settings,themes and the philosophy connotation of Gothic stories.Thus,he added certain value and artistic charm to the Gothic literature.Also,since he created the Gothic short stories from the aforementioned aspects,his stories were endowed the characteristics with distinct sublation.This thesis aims to interpret the impact of sublation on the development of Gothic literature.By analyzing the development route of Gothic tradition,the elements of "promotion" and "abandonment",and the significance of sublation in Edgar Allan Poe’s works were discussed.It is divided into three parts,including introduction,body part with three chapters and conclusion.In the introduction,firstly,the author briefly introduces the literary status and artistic value of Edgar Allan Poe’s Gothic short stories,as well as the relationship between Poe’s creation and Gothic tradition.Secondly,the author reviews the state of scholarship that concern to Edgar Allan Poe and Gothic literature,and summarizes the academic achievements with referential significance.Finally,the author puts forward the argument of Edgar Allan Poe’s sublation of Gothic,and demonstrates the importance of this sublation from the perspectives of literature history,to fill the research blank.This thesis consists of three chapters.Chapter One addresses the inevitability of sublation in Gothic literature.By summarizing the development of Gothic tradition and reviewing the fragmentary sublation of Gothic attributes in classics,this thesis draws out the argument of sublation of Edgar Allan Poe.Chapter Two discusses Poe’s"promotion" and "abandonment" in Gothic tradition respectively.He promoted the aesthetic value and strengthened the Gothic terror theme.Meanwhile,he abandoned the rigid storyline and flat characters in early Gothic tradition.Thus,the transcendence in exploring human nature and diversifying the type of novels were achieved.Chapter Three is the key part of this thesis.It probes the influence brought by Edgar Allan Poe’s sublation from the perspectives of literary value,moral connotation,social value,philosophical value,and etc.Based on various aspects,such as unity of effects",unreliable narration,embryonic form of the 19th century American spirit,anti-colonial thought.The author analyzes in-depth,by taking Edgar Allan Poe’s The Cask of Amontillado","William Wilson","The Black Cat" and"The Fall of the House of Usher" as research obj ects.In conclusion,the authors summarizes the research of the thesis,to emphasize the profound influence of Edgar Allan Poe’s sublation on Gothic,and therefore,the continuous value of Poe’s sublation in modern literature was highlighted. |
