“Cultural awareness” has been written as an important key competency in the2017 edition of the High School English Curriculum Standards.Its importance is self-evident.However,the phenomenon of neglecting or weakening cultural education in teaching is widespread,and it has created many English classes with knowledge but no culture.In the new era of comprehensively cultivating students' key competency,teachers should fully realize the great significance of enhancing students' cultural awareness.What's more,for high school students,English reading class is one of the most important methods for language learning,and it is an important means to cultivate their cultural awareness.Therefore,based on this,the author combines the current situation in XX High School and uses instruments such as testing,interview and experimenting to explore the following questions: 1.What is the current status of cultural awareness teaching in high school English teaching? 2.How to use English reading teaching to cultivate the cultural awareness of high school students? 3.With the application of strategies for cultural awareness cultivation in reading teaching,can the student's English reading scores be improved?Firstly,120 students in three different grades were chosen randomly to complete the sociocultural test.And then,3 students were chosen by the author according to their scores of the sociocultural test,representing the three levels: high,medium and low.And then,the author selected the culturally-rich college entrance examination reading comprehension questions to test 110 students in Class 5 and Class 6 of XX High School and used it as students' pre-test score.The author conducts interviews on the cultural teaching strategies of all 3 teachers in the second grade English group.After ensuring that the objective conditions of the two classes of teachers,teaching materials,etc.are the same,in the control class(Class 6),the author uses traditional reading teaching,focusing on vocabulary explanation and grammar learning,while the experimental class(Class 5)are conducted a cultural reading teaching once a week.After the end of the teaching experiment,the pre-and post-test results of thetwo classes were quantitatively analyzed.And the form of English reading ability self-evaluation was issued in two classes for qualitative analysis.The major findings are:(1)The current status of cultural awareness teaching in high school English teaching: students have already realized the importance of the cultural awareness in English teaching.However,in real English learning class,especially in English reading class,teachers uses simple teaching methods and pays less attention to overall discourse analysis,which leads to students' poor cultural knowledge.(2)Teachers can use strategies such as cultural background knowledge penetration,overall discourse analysis,vocabulary culture connotation teaching and comparison.(3)The students' evaluation form for the effectiveness of their reading ability and the experimental results show that through the use of cultural awareness training strategies in English reading teaching,the students' performance has improved and the students' cultural awareness has also improved.
