| Yu Hua's To Live has been named one of the most influential ten books of the last decade at home.This novel is not only a tragedy filled with pain but also a tale of humility,beauty,love and ultimate redemption.The translated version has attracted much attention after being published in America.Out of respect for the original author,Micheal Berry tried to keep the text's flavor in both content and form.On account of this point,he has succeeded in helping English-speaking readers to grasp spirits of the text.The concept of foregrounding originates from the painting art,when painter highlights the core object by differentiating it from the others.Later on,this method is employed in literature,making foregrounding an important idea in stylistics.With the popular linguistic system as background,foregrounding languages deviate from it in order to obtain a certain aesthetic effect.In this thesis,the writer intends to appreciate the foregrounding languages in the original text and analyzes the way translator deals with this phenomenon.15 cases are analyzed based on Leech's classification of foregrounding along with the peculiarities of the original text.In light of deviation,translation analysis is undertaken on grammatical,semantic and register level.As for parallelism,the research incorporates analysis of repetition and parallel structure.Based on the case studies,it can be found that foregrounding languages have been an artistic way of achieving literary goals,exceeding reader's expectations and reinforcing theme of the novel in an unusually expressive way.Moreover,Micheal Berry acts as a faithful translator,keeping as much of the original's sense and form as possible.Although literal translation is preferred,the translator also makes a concession when the awkward combination of meaning and form does not make sense. |
