August Strindberg's plays are more complex and rich than those of other naturalistic playwrights in the nineteenth century. He both showed progressive Social Ideas and conservative Feminist Thoughts. His dramatic art advocates are very groundbreaking, but at the same time, they also have profound influence from predecessors. This paper explores the influence of Zola and Ibsen on the creation of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas by starting from the theatrical theories and thematic thoughts of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas and combining with relevant literary theories.Further more,it analyses the relationship with Strindberg as the core.It also reexamines the value and complexity of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas from different angles. This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is the introduction.Firstly,it introduces the literary achievements and literary status of Strindberg.Secondly,it summarizes the domestic research status of Strindberg, and it is found that there is a gap in the comparative study with Strindberg as the core.Thirdly, this paper puts forward the research ideas, research methods and research value of this topic through the study of theatrical theory and thematic thinking. The second part is the first chapter, this chapter holds that the dominant ideology of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas, that is,the concept of women, are backward. It considers that the form of Strindberg's naturalistic drama is advanced. It focuses on the relationship of the dialogues between Strindberg and Zola in theatrical theory.Firstly,it discusses the formation of Zola's naturalistic drama theory and its existing problems.Secondly,it discusses Zola's influence on Strindberg's naturalistic drama theory and their mutual literary criticism.Thirdly, from the standpoint of Strindberg, this paper discusses the perfection and innovation of the theory of naturalistic drama by Strindberg. And it holds that Strindberg's naturalistic drama has advanced external forms. The third part is the second chapter. This chapter focuses on discrepancies and links between Strindberg and Ibsen in theatrical themes.Firstly,it discusses the three relationships between women and family in Ibsen's drama on women's issues, and summarizes Ibsen's concept of women. After that,it discusses the challenge of Strindberg to Ibsen on the theme of women. Finally,it combines narratology, psychology, feminism and other theories to explore the manifestations and reasons why the concept of women in Strindberg lags behind the development of the times. The fourth part is the third chapter. On the basis of the first two chapters, this chapter finds that the other social thoughts of Strindberg are progressive, and that the symbolism in his naturalistic dramas promote the development of Western drama.Based on this, this chapter reassesses the value and status of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas. The last part is the conclusion. The thesis holds that Strindberg's naturalistic drama combines innovation of artistic form and conservatism of ideological content. This phenomenon arises from Strindberg's reflection on his predecessors and his reaction in dramas. On the whole, however, the merits of Strindberg's naturalistic dramas outweigh such flaws. Therefore,we should carry on the diachronic,multi-angle,more in-depth discussion and research on Strindberg's dramatic creation.
