Norman Mailer is a famous contemporary American Jewish writer and political commentator. His novels mostly reflect the social problems of the United States. Most of Mailer's novels are about American politics, and The Armies of the Night is based on his involvement in demonstrations against the Vietnam War and won the Pulitzer Prize, the highest honor in his life.As Mailer's representative work, this novel highlights the typical characteristics of new journalistic novels with the description of characters and scenes in great detail. On the theory of the cultural research, sociology research, this thesis is based on the lens narrative as a breakthrough point. This thesis analyzes mainly three methods of the lens narrative: panoramic lens, long lens and high Angle lens. The thesis also explores the contradiction between the presentation of lens images and the hidden content,on which Mailer reflects he phenomenon of the media's distortion of facts and the multiple social problems in the United States. This thesis is mainly divided into five parts:The introduction mainly introduces Mailer's special feelings for images and his attention to social problems in his creation, expounds the research status of his works and lens narration at home and abroad. We will point out the research ideas, methods, values and significance of the topic. The first chapter is the analysis of the reasons of lens narration. The experience of the director and the reporter cultivated Mailer's keen consciousness of lens and his passion for exploring the truth, which provided an important precondition for lens narration. Moreover, the fusion between lens narration and the New Journalistic novels in scene presentation, the author's involvement in the event, the clear-cut position and other aspects became an important factor for the adoption of lens narration. The second chapter demonstrates the superiority of lens narration in vividly presenting the whole process of demonstration by analyzing Mailer's application of panoramic lens narration, overhead lens narration and perspective lens narration.Byrecording the chaotic situation of the march and the activities of the participants.Mailer revealed the conflicts of interest and the lack of effective command in the Anti-war march. The third chapter compares Mailer's anti-war fighter image with his anti-protest attitude, and contrast the image of national freedom and democracy under the lens and the multiple social problems in the United States outside the lens.Mailer reveals the huge contrast between the content presented and the covered content in the process of lens narration. The fourth chapter reflects on the contradiction between presentation and masking from three perspectives: the limitation of lens narrative, media serving the subject of power, and glamorize hippies' image for personal reasons. It reveals the lens image distortion caused by the limited vision of the lens and the performability of people, criticizes the distortion of facts by the media, and probes into the influence of Mailer's subjective attitude on the presentation of contradictions. The conclusion points out that the fiction reveals the social and cultural manifestations of multiple social problems in the United States under the intensification of the Vietnam War.And Mailer explores actively the ways to solve American social problems in his novels.
