Dissolution Of The Boundaries Of History And Literature In The Armies Of The Night

Under the shadow of the Cold War,some labile factors in American society continued to develop,which had made the American people disappointed with American politics and society.Norman Mailer,as a writer,carefully examined this society with his professional qualities,and the turbulent society had provided a lot of writing material for his creation.At the same time,his works had become an indispensable material in researching American history.Despite the divergent comments made by American critics on Norman Mailer,he had won Pulitzer Prizes twice for his two masterpieces: The Armies of the Night and The Executioner's Song.Especially The Armies of the Night,recording the Great March in October 1967,reflected the events in detail and from the whole.Based on the characteristics of historical novel and literature,this thesis analyses the narrative features and the history features of the text,so as to explain dissolution of the boundaries between history and literature.This thesis is divided into four parts.The introduction mainly includes the statement of research questions,literature review,and main points of view.Chapter one analyses the narrative techniques of fiction.The narrative techniques,on the one hand,present the artistic characteristics of the novel,on the other hand,they dissolve the objectivity and uniqueness of history.Chapter two mainly analyses the history material in The Armies of the Night.While narrating history with novel techniques,the author does not neglect the authenticity of historical materials,and the novel can not be created without a specific historical period which has certain historical characteristics.Chapter three mainly focuses on the integration of history and literature.History is inevitably subjective in the process of compiling,but subjectivity must be constrained by the objectivity of historical facts.The conclusion further expresses the author's attitude towards the relationshipof history and literature.History is not contradictory to literature.History can become the material of the novels,and novels can add appropriate means to understanding history texts.
