In the increasingly competitive society,the demands for the talents become more and more high,especially the need for innovative talents.This situation requires our education system to pay more attention to cultivating students' critical thinking ability.The General English Curriculum Standards(2017)clearly stated that the ordinary high school English curriculum should enable students to develop multiple critical thinking ability through a variety of activities that integrate language,culture and thinking,and develop students' ability of analyzing and solving problems in English.The goal of thinking quality in the curriculum demands the students to be equipped with the ability of judging various ideas,expressing their ideas and thinking creatively.Based on the theory of constructivism and critical discourse analysis,this study aims to explore the effectiveness of critical reading teaching.The research questions are as follows.(1)Does critical reading teaching promote the use of senior high school students' critical reading strategies?(2)Does critical reading teaching improve senior high school students' reading achievements? The research instrument includes questionnaire,test paper,and interview.The research subjects are from two parallel classes of GuanTao Experimental Middle School.Traditional reading teaching is used for the control class,and critical reading teaching is used for the experimental class.After the five-month experiment,all the data are collected and analyze by SPSS.Through discussion,the following conclusions are drawn:(1)Critical reading is conducive to promoting students to use critical reading strategies.Different strategies have different effects on students.The students have a good command on analyzing,inferring,annotating,summarizing and predicting.The improvement on evaluating and questioning is not evident;(2)Critical reading can improve students' reading achievements.The results show that critical reading helps to promote students to use critical reading strategies and improve the students' reading achievements.
