As one of the important symbolic factors of the origin of Chinese civilization, the academic circles have never stopped discussing this aspect. As the fringe of Chinese civilization, the northern region has not been paid enough attention by academic circles.Previous studies on prehistoric sites in northern China mostly limited a watershed or discussed the nature, function and background of a site. With the gradual enrichment of archaeological materials in recent years,it is particularly important to systematically sort out the urban sites found in northern China and put them into the context of the northern region.According to the differences of geographical factors and the discovery of urban sites, the northern region can be divided into four major regions, namely, the central and southern part of Inner Mongolia, the northern part of shaanxi, the central and northern part of shanxi and the northwestern part of hebei.Based on the archeological culture and chronology of the northern region, this paper analyzes the construction and continuous chronology of the city site, which can be divided into the late yangshao period, the second miaodigou period, the early longshan period and the late longshan period. At the same time, the construction mode, scale and settlement form of urban sites are investigated, and the development status of urban sites in various regions is compared horizontally to understand the social forms of development in each region in each period. The process of urban site development and evolution in each region is vertically mastered so as to analyze the social development process and settlement hierarchy in the northern region.
