Third Party Discourse Intervention Strategies Based On Features Of Conflict Talk Between Chinese Mothers And Daughters-in-Law

Guided by Conversation Analysis and Politeness Theory,the thesis applies methods of qualitative and quantitative,description and explanation to explore 78 pieces of conflict talk between Chinese mothers and daughters-in-law collected from three Chinese classical TV plays,attempting to settle the following two questions:(1)What are major causes,common features and discourse models for conflict talk between Chinese mothers and daughters-in-law?(2)What discourse strategies does a third party adopt to implement effective intervention?The major findings can be concluded as blew:First,the main causes accounting for conflict talk between Chinese mothers and daughters-in-law are summarized as following ones:improper repair,improper deixis,improper rhetoric,and improper code-switching as well as using abusiveness.Second,common features of conflict talk between Chinese mothers and daughters-in-law are concluded as follows:information asymmetry,uncontrolled emotion,deadlocked confrontation,arbitration requirement,contradiction accumulation and third party intervention.Third,the specific conflict talk approximately is dived into three stages,in which different discourse models are presented.Claim vs.counter claim,directive vs.refusal and provoking question vs.opposing answer are major models in the initiation stage.The maintenance stage is frequently reflected in four basic models:negation,explanation,repetition and question.Converting topics,compromise,stalemate and third party intervention are four frequent models appearing in the termination stage.Last,a third party can adopt discourse strategies of Explanation,Order,Suggestion.Shift,Question and Combination to implement effective intervention.Explanation Strategy is to eliminate misunderstanding by realizing information symmetry.Order Strategy is employing directive or making a decision to terminate conflict directly when one party(or both)loses control of emotion.Putting forward advice or proposals to seek mutual reconciliation and switching topics to transfer conflict focus are Suggestion and Shift strategies respectively,both of which are used in deadlock.Question Strategy means a third party conducts arbitration of conflict through questions.The binding of two or more strategies is named Combination Strategy to solve long-term and complex conflict talk.Research on third party discourse intervention strategies based on the analysis of main causes,common features and discourse models for conflict talk between Chinese mothers and daughters-in-law,contributes to helping family members,especially husbands,to handle conflict talk between mothers and daughters-in-law,realizing family harmony.
