Studies related to the testing effect or the retrieval practice effect have shown that repetitive retrieval of items helps maintain memory, especially in long-term memory. In real life, due to the characteristics of some learning materials, learners can only use a specific method(such as typing output, oral answer or reciting silently)to retrieval, whether the affect of explicit retrieval and on memory effect is superior to implicit retrieval is still not defined in current research, also the relevant influencing factors have yet to be identified.Cognitive style as an important variable in individual differences may be related to individual memory effects. This study examined the differences in vocabulary memory effects between explicit retrieval and implicit retrieval, and analyzed the causes of differences between explicit retrieval and implicit retrieval from the perspective of cognitive style.Experiment I used the experimental design of 3(retrieval method:explicit retrieval, implicit retrieval, repeat learning)*2(time interval:15 minutes,2 days)to explored the influence of explicit retrieval and implicit retrieval of the verbal response on the test effect.Experiment II adopted the experimental design of 2(cognitive styles:verbal, repeat learning)*3(retrieval practices:explicit retrieval, implicit retrieval, repeat learning)*2(time interval:15 minutes,2 days),combined with the cognitive style variables to analyze the memory effect differences between explicit retrieval and implicit retrieval.Under the conditions of this study,it was concluded that the effect of short-term memory was almost the same for the explicit retrieval, implicit retrieval, and repeat learning, well implicit retrieval had a more positive effect on the storage of long-term memory compared with explicit retrieval and repeat learning. The types of individual cognitive style did not influence the vocabulary memory, indicating that cognitive style may be not the cause of the difference in memory effect between explicit retrieval and implicit retrieval.
