Pragmatic Failures In Subtitle Translation Of Internet Dramas And Countermeasures

In recent years,more and more American dramas are introduced into China via the Internet,which stimulates the rise of the subtitle translation groups on the Internet.This thesis takes the ShinY subtitle group's version of the hit American drama Game of Thrones as research subject and studies two kinds of pragmatic failures in the subtitle translation by combining documentary research and empirical research.In order to improve the quality of the subtitle translation of the Internet dramas,the author puts forward some corresponding strategiesThe thesis aims to answer the following questions:1 What are the main categories of pragmatic failures in subtitle translations?2 what are the main reasons for pragmatic failures in subtitle's translations?3 How can we reduce pragmatic failures in subtitle's translations?This thesis takes the ShinY subtitle group's version of Game of Thrones as corpus,and analyzes the pragmatic failures in the translations.The result of study shows that there are serious pragmatic failures in subtitle's translations,which can be categorized into pragmalinguistic failures and sociopragmatic failures.Pragmalingustic failures are the main problems in subtitle's translations.The reasons for these pragmatic failures lie in the translators'varying translation ability,their neglect of the differences between English and Chinese culture,and their ignorance of the story background of the drama.These failures would mix up the personality of characters in the drama,and would make Chinese audience misunderstand the story of play,and then influence their appreciation of the drama.Even worse,these failures may become barriers in the cultural exchangeBased on these findings,the author puts forward three corresponding countermeasures against the pragmatic failures.First of all,the translators in the subtitle groups should enrich their own cultural knowledge.Secondly,they should understand the story of the drama thoroughly before and while they translate it.Finally,translators should employ various translation strategies flexibly to deal with the culture-specific words and expressions in the subtitle.Limited by the author's ability and the space of the paper,besides,all the examples of this thesis come from only one American drama Game of Thrones,the pragmatic failures revealed in this thesis may not be so full-scale,and the three suggestions may not be suitable for all the subtitle groups.Nevertheless,this study may provide some guidance and support for translators in the subtitle groups to improve their translation of subtitle,and offer Chinese audience the same viewing experience as the audience from source language does.
