Bai xianyong(1937—)is a well-known overseas Chinese writer.He is the author of the short story collection Taipei People.Lonely Seventeen,New Yorker,the novel Crystal Boys,the prose collection The tree is still like this etc.The stage play The Dream of the Garden,his father’s biography General Bai Chongxi’s figure collection and his Bai Xianyong elaborated on Dream of Red Mansions compiled by the lectures in the general lectures of the Dream of Red Mansions of National Taiwan University.Russell Leong(1950—)is a famous Chinese American writer.In 1993,he published the collection of poems The Country of Dreams and Dusts.In 2000,he published the collection of short stories called Phoenix Eyes and Other Stories.In 2001,he won the American Book Award.The novels of two outstanding writers show their concern and solicitude for the homosexual community.In order to enrich our understanding of the two writers.this paper will make a comparative study of their novels with gay themes.The thesis consists of three parts:The first part is the introduction,which combing the academic research situation of Bai Xianyong and Russell Leong’s works.and on this basis.explains the origin and significance of the thesis topic.The second part is the main body.The first chapter is a comparison of the living conditions of homosexuals who are wandering and lonely.The first section analyzes the torture and desires of the homosexuals.The second section analyzes the different causes for these characters’ wandering and loneliness.The characters in Bai Xianyong’s works are mostly mourning about time lapse and the sadness of nowhere to live.The characters in Russell Leong’s works feel the conflict within the community of Asian American homosexuals in the United States due to their racial identity.The third section analyzes the different manifestations of homosexuals in the conflicts with their families in the works of the two writers.It points out that the rejection of family members is an important cause of homosexuals’ spiritual loneliness.Therefore,the recognition of family members is urgently needed by homosexual groups.The second chapter is about the comparison of homosexual identity.This chapter is divided into two sections.which analyze the similarities and differences between the characters of two writers’ gender identity and ethnic identity.The third chapter is a comparison of AIDS writing between the two writers.The first section analyzes the similarities between the two writers’ writings on AIDS,that is,revealing social problems and the new dilemmas that AIDS has created for the homosexual community.The second section analyzes the differences between the two.Bai Xianyong’s novels show the self-salvation of homosexuals in face of death and their mutual help beyond gender and ethnicity,while Russell Leong’s novels show the increasingly contradictory mentality of homosexuals under the threat of AIDS,and at the same time send out calls for Asian AIDS to fight for their rights.The third part is the conclusion,which summarizes the research results.
