Reading is one of the most important language skills.Cultivating students' reading ability is not only the focus of English teaching,but also one of the important content of training students' ability of comprehensive language.However,the current situation of English reading teaching in middle schools is not satisfactory.There are still many drawbacks in the current classroom teaching of English reading in middle schools,and teachers' concepts have not been completely changed.Therefore,it is particularly important to change the mode of reading teaching and find an efficient teaching mode suitable for students and in accordance with the learning rules.Mind mapp was proposed by Tony Buzan in the 1960 s.Since then,he has constantly converted his thinking and research into words and published some books.It is a powerful thinking tool and an effective way to visualize the process of thinking.Mind map,as a visual tool,is based on divergent thinking and graphical expression.Combining pictures and colors helps to attract students' attention in class.This study will attempt to apply mind map to English reading class in middle school to verify its effectiveness as a teaching tool.This thesis mainly studies two aspects: one is can the application of mind map in English reading teaching improve students' the ability to generalize the main idea;the other is can the application of mind map in English reading teaching improve students' the ability to understand the specific information.Through the analysis of the current situation of mind map in English reading at home and abroad,this paper combined the concepts and theoretical basis of reading and mind map and then tried to apply mind map to English reading teaching in middle school.In order to explore the influence of mind map on students' reading,the author selected two parallel classes of grade one in a middle school as the research object,which lasted six months.Finally,the data of questionnaires and tests was tested by software.The results show that the application of mind map in English reading class has a significant effect on the improvement of students' performance in the experimental class,while the improvement of students' reading performance in the control class has also been made,but the effect is not as obvious as that in the experimental class.Mind map canstimulate students' interest in English reading class,actively carry out extracurricular English reading,improve students' ability to use reading strategies and effectively carry out cooperative learning activities in the classroom.Finally,according to the conclusions of this study,some suggestions are put forward for teachers and the shortcomings of this research are analyzed,including the shortcomings of the implementation and verification process of the experiment itself.It is hoped that this paper can provide some suggestions for future research on the application of mind map in the field of English teaching.
