A sense of alienation refers to an unfamiliar and estranged relationship between people. This thesis will use “a sense of alienation” to summarize the loneliness, anxiety and bitterness portrayed in modern figurative paintings. All these paintings, which are composed by a great many artists, feature impressive images, settings and elusive narrative styles,as well as distinctive composition of a picture. The clues which are able to summarize the essence of these works of art are the sense of alienation. There are multiple factors that are responsible for this sense of alienation, including life pressure from the social reform and a fear of the era of information explosion, which are caused by fast-paced lifestyle in modern society.Artists are keen to capture these symptoms among modern people, creating and refining works that reflect this sense of estrangement. The motifs and spiritual outlooks shown in such paintings are not only windows through which artists can show us the real world, but also a new art form and a new image in the school of figurative paintings since they regain popularity.Unlike traditional figurative art, this new art form focuses on changes in the structures and languages, narrative styles and a sense of estrangement in the theme. This thesis illustrates a few contemporary artists and their works featuring figurative paintings and explores how they reflect the sense of alienation, why they want to express it,and how it inspires me in my creation of art.
