Nowadays, the multimodal meaning construction has been extensively applied to the discourse analysis with the development of the information technology. In this study,a multimodal discourse analysis of Ice Age is carried out in a meaning-making way from the perspective of the functional linguistics, which aims at exploring how the representational meaning, the interactive meaning, and the compositional meaning affect the expression of the meaning in the film of Ice Age and how the different modalities cooperate with each other to generate the holistic meaning of this film. This study adopts both qualitative research and quantitative research.44 typical scenes are selected from Ice Age as the research data, among which 33 pictures are chosen for analyzing the presentation of the three meanings of the visual grammar in Ice Age and 11 pictures are employed for discussing the relationship of the visual modality and the auditive modality. The major findings are as follows.Firstly,in the film of Ice Age,the representational meaning, the interactive meaning, and the compositional meaning in the image are achieved respectively via the use of the vector, the different choices of contact, social distance, attitude, and modality, and the realization of information value, salience, and framing.Secondly,by means of actualizing the complementarity of the three meanings, the image in this film can highlight points, reflect themes, and establish interactions.Thirdly, through the cooperation of the different modalities, this film conveys its integrated discourse meaning. In short, synchronization can enhance the content of the image while separation can make some imagination space for the viewer and strengthen the continuity of the image shift.Meanwhile, contraposition can lay the foundation for the following plots. It is hoped that this study could expand the breadth and depth of the multimodaldiscourse analysis and provide a multimodal method of a better appreciation of the film for the audience.
