Marianne Moore?1887-1972?is one of the most prestigious American female poets in the 20th century. With the dual status of being both female and Irish by descent,Moore shows her concern for the Other who are dissociated from the dominant ideology discourse.Through the subversion of the images of the Other,Moore attempts to appeal for equal rights for women, the colonized, and nature that are marginalized. The researches about Moore's poetry in China mainly focus on the subject of Chinese aesthetics, modernity, morality, and the ecological consciousness, few scholars show their concern about the images of the Other. The existence of the Other exposes the living conditions of groups that are marginalized, oppressed, and excluded. The study on the Other is significant in pursuing equality, and constructing the harmonious society. Therefore, this thesis will focus on the images of the Other in Moore's poetry to reflect her pursuit of equality. This thesis is composed of five chapters.Chapter One begins with a brief introduction to Moore's poetic achievements, literature review for domestic and foreign researches on Moore's poetry, the concept of the Other and thesis statement.Chapter Two mainly explores Moore's subversion of femininity of women through the disintegration of femininity of women in marriage and women in career, and reveals that femininity is not women's character flaw and it exposes man's exploitation of women in the patriarchal society.Chapter Three focuses on Moore's subversion of the stereotypes of the colonized through the rebellion against the barbarization of the colonized and the rebellion against the derogation of the native culture.Moore pursues racial equality and culture equality through her disintegration of the colonial superiority.Chapter Four mainly studies Moore's subversion of the inferiorisation of nature through the resistance to the backgrounded status of nature and the instrumental treatment of nature, and exposes Moore's criticism on the anthropocentric ideology and her concern for the voiceless Other. The final chapter is a conclusion and points out Moore's pursuit of equality and harmony.
