Since the strategy of“Chinese Culture Going Out”was put into action at the beginning of the 21st century,films have been rising to its prominence as a medium for cultural communication and exchange around the world.With special value and positive significance in the promotion of ideas of this new era,the new main-melody film attracts widespread attention as well.As one of the crucial approaches to promote Chinese films overseas,subtitle translation matters predominantly in the film communication effects.From this,the research on communication effects of subtitle translation of new main-melody films would broaden research fields,diversify thinking methods of relevant scholars,and contribute to the“Chinese Culture Going Out”.The thesis takes quantitative and qualitative research methods to explore the following research questions:1.What translation strategies,methods and techniques are reflected in the subtitle translation of the film Wolf Warrior II and Operation Red Sea?2.What is the cognitive effect of subtitle translation of the film Wolf Warrior II and Operation Red Sea?3.What is the emotional effect of subtitle translation of the film Wolf Warrior II and Operation Red Sea?During the research,participants were postgraduates of English majors from a university in Liaoning Province,and foreign students from a university in Beijing.Questionnaires and semi-structured interviews are used as research instruments in this thesis.The research found that domestication strategy is generally employed to translate culture-loaded terms,imperative sentences and dirty talks,while foreignization strategy is adopted to translate military terms;the analysis from subtitle translation principles,sentence patterns and literary and non-literary perspectives has proved that the subtitle translation of both films are effective.According to the analysis of empirical study,English subtitle plays an active role in conveying the plot;actors'performances and pictures of both films are of prime importance in helping audiences understand the meaning of conversations;cultural blanks and the lack of thoughts caused by cultural background differences cannot be compensated by pictures and subtitles of films.As such,it has been found that translation strategies adopted here are contributive to the better recognition on English subtitles by foreigners,showing that the subtitle translation of both films has achieved good communication effects.This study provides a new perspective for the research on film subtitle translations,which validates the communication effect of subtitle translation through an empirical research,and will contribute to the future researches on film subtitle translations to some extent.
