A Study Of The Identity Construction And Its Translation In Waiting For The Barbarians

Waiting for the Barbarians is the first work which brought Coetzee an international reputation.Coetzee gave the contradictions and conflicts between his own colonial consciousness and anti-colonial consciousness to the fictional characters of different identities,and used the inner monologue of the protagonist's old chief executive as a clue to tell the continuous conflict between the subject and the object.For the first time,this paper pays attention to the construction of character identity in the works and its influence on translation.It explores the translation of the power subject identity,the regulated object identity and the mixed dual identity features in the works,and analyzes the reproduction of the characters in different translations.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the main part is divided into three chapters.The first chapter mainly discusses the translation of the identity characteristics of power subjects.Concerned about the violent colonial status represented by Colonel Joll,Colonel Joll and his soldiers,who are the main players of power,subjected atrocities and language control to the disciplined objects.In the original text,Coetzee uses the movements and language to show the violent scenes and the arbitrariness and cruel character of the colonial identity.This chapter combines the specific translation examples to analyze the reproduction of the power words in the translation and the enhancement and weakening of the identity of the characters.The second chapter mainly discusses the translation of the identity of the subject being disciplined.The other is an important part of the colonial writing.The empire creates a powerful image and demonstrates the authority of the empire by constructing the image of the other who opposes it,violently conquering it,and bringing it back.In this chapter,we pay attention to the two types of other images,namely,aphasia,obedient other and gradually awake the individual consciousness,and analyze the translator's reproduction of different identity characteristics of the two types of other people in different translations.The third chapter mainly discusses the translation of mixed dual identity.The narrator who pays attention to the story,the old chief executive contends with his colonialism and anti-colonialism in the process of identity transformation.Coetzee expresses the contradictions and psychological resistance under different identities through delicate psychological description.The translator grasps the nuances.It determines whether the mixed dual identity can be accurately reproduced.
