A Report On The E-C Translation Of English Colonization And Empire(chapter 10-11)

During the 16 th century to the beginning of the 20 th century,Britain had accumulated its capital by colonization and expansion which led to unbalanced development in Asian,African and Latin American areas.British colonization and expansion had a great influence on modern history,politics and economy.However,it is rare to find a book that can provide with more details about this history.English Colonization and Empire,written by Alfred Caldecott in 1891,comprehensively and deeply describes this history in an objective way.The author chose Chapter 10(Native Races)and 11(Education and Religion)as her English-Chinese translation task.This translation report consists of five chapters.It firstly gives a brief introduction on the background and importance of this translation task.After analyzing the source text from lexical,syntactic and textual levels and listing requirements from the entrusting party,the author utilized online academic resources such as CNKI and Google Academic to search background information about Alfred Caldecott,British colonization and its influence on education and religion in the colonies.In order to ensure the accuracy of the translation,the author chose professional dictionaries such as Names of the World's Places and Names of the World's Peoples.The author analyzed parallel texts of A Brief History of Hundred Years and A Child's History of England to have a better understanding about translating historical texts.Guided by Adaptation Theory of Jef Verschueren,the author translated and revised drafts by herself,partner,the supervisor and the entrusting party to conduct the quality control in translation.In the case analysis,the author selected several cases from lexical,syntactic and discourse levels including cultural differences,temporal and spacial relations,pronouns,active and passive voices,statics and dynamics,cohesion and coherence.The author analyzed these translation difficulties from four perspectives which are adaptation to structure,adaptation to context,dynamics of adaptability and salience of adaptation process.In the end,the author concluded the translation process and gave reflections as well as implications.The author had a deep understanding about British colonization and its influence on education and religion in colonies after this translation task.Also,the author learned the availability of being guided by Adaptation Theory during the translation process,which will provide more references for future translation tasks.Furthermore,the author recognized the importance of preparation before translation,quality control while translation and revision and feedback after translation.
