Liu Xinwu is a “problem novelist” who wrote about hot topics of the modern age.His novel Head Teacher not only aroused heated discussion, but also made him become famous in China.Behind the halo of the award, several factors become important means for him to construct a new journey in literature in the name of “new”,including the promotion of core periodicals and editors, the public broadcast and propagation, and the critics and academic contends revolved around the novel.A sober awareness of the intervention of literature's external factors reveal the close connection between social incidents and literary texts, and thus restore the original state of the “new era literature”.When we read Head Teacher and the novels written before the “new era” by Liu Xinwu,it is not difficult to find the inner relation between the two in terms of language style, narrative skills, healing and self-salvation approaches as well.In the new historical period,“new era literature” has to resist the old style and retain some “classic” writing conventions, telling new stories in old ways familiar to the public, and constructing its own discourse in contradiction. When “new ear literature” gained legitimacy, the question of “where to go next” arose.Taking “writing life” as the keynote,Liu Xinwu's “soul construction” became gradually mature since the Three-dimensional Intersection Bridge.Likewise,Bell and Drum Tower is a pioneer in exploring the form of realistic novels written in the structure of “orange flaps”.Different from the avant-garde writers' position of avoiding content exploration and attaching importance to form reform,Liu Xinwu on the one hand sought to broaden his vision brought by modernism, and on the other hand insisted on the realistic creation based on daily life.He also looked into social changes from the real-life world, and showed the ordinary life of common people.Furthermore,Liu Xinwu's subsequent documentary novels showed his persistently keen awareness of social events, concerns for daily life and insistence on “the goodness of life”.To this end,Liu Xinwu explored an “ordinary road” different from “pioneer literature” with the tendency of daily life writing. This path reflects the concern and intervention of the real society, which provides the possibility for contemporary literature to get rid of its predicament. The first chapter of this thesis discusses the creation of “new era literature” from the perspective of “text and events”,and brings many literary events of the text into the vision of investigating the “classicization” in Head Teacher.Besides,it is found that Head Teacher, regarded as the starting point of the “new era literature”,is not only an afterthought, but also the manipulation of the official logic and the meaning construction of the mainstream.Thereby, during this period the literary circle has completed the confirmation of the question of “what to write” in literary creation. The second chapter focuses on the creation of literary text itself,by exploring the “conservatism” and “innovation” of “new era” in the issue of “how to write”.It is intended to illustrate the isomorphism of Liu Xinwu's novel creation before and after the smashing of the “Gang of Four”,as well as the context of the times in which this effect was produced. The third chapter firstly presents the ebb of “scar literature” and the transformation of “new era literature” in the historical field, and then explores Liu Xinwu's choice in the cultural transformation.Under the impact of western cultural resources, facing the new problem of “what to write” and “how to write”,Liu Xinwu deliberately kept a distance from the “modernist” because of his “old style” in writing and insisted on realism. He just regards “modernism” as an artistic technique, but still takes social real life as the main subject of writing, and constantly deepens and develops realism through literary creation.
