In the 1960 s,Sino-Japanese trade experienced many forms, such as "Friendly Trade","LT Trade" and "Memorandum Trade".Under the international background of the cold war,the economic exchanges between China and Japan were deeply constrained by the containment strategy of the United States in East Asia.During this period,Sino-Soviet relations continued to deteriorate, and the multilateral interaction between Sino-U.S.relations,and the United States and Japan the relations, profoundly affected the judgment and choice of China's foreign policy.President John F.Kennedy,Lyndon Johnson and Richard Nixon's policies toward China and Japan in different periods of government had evolved and correlated with each other,Japan's attitudes toward U.S.relations in different periods of government have made Sino-Japanese trade show different characteristics from those in the 1950 s.Based on the systematic use of multilateral archives, this paper explores the relationship between American's strategy of containment of East Asia and the development and changes of Sino-Japanese trade in the 1960 s under different U.S.governments.The paper consists of four chapters.Chapter one deals with the characteristics of the influence of the US government's trade control over China on Sino-Japanese trade in the 1950 s.Chapter two mainly discusses how Prime Minister Ikeda consulted with President Kennedy and obtained American's understanding on the differences of Sino-Japanese trade so as to further promote the development of Sino-Japanese trade.Chapter three mainly analyses the characteristics of the Johnson Administration's China policy and the restrictions of the internal adjustment of the government on China's policy,as well as the tortuous changes of Sino-Japanese trade before and after Sato's Cabinet came into power. The fourth chapter focuses on the impact of Nixon's "Vietnamization" and Asian power contraction policies on U.S.-Japan relations,as well as the impact of the detente of Sino-U.S.relations on Japan's attitude towards trade with China.
