| Chinese flower-and-bird paintings have emerged as early as in the primitive society.Painted on historically primitive pottery and bronze ware,"flower-and-bird" pictures are full of mysterious color and symbolic totem.Until to the Tang dynasty,flower-and-bird paintings formed into an independent study,which is a transition of painting style from decorative one to realistic one.In the Song dynasty,Chinese flower-and-bird paintings has been well-developed and reached its heyday in support of the emperors.During that period,the brushwork of flower-and-bird paintings was exquisite,neat and realistic,which became the milestone of traditional Chinese realistic flower-and-bird paintings.As the society develops and progresses,traditional Chinese realistic flower-and-bird paintings have been further absorbing,transforming and innovating combined traditional thoughts with excellent foreign thoughts together.It actually not only broke the traditional pattern as well as complicated rules and regulations,but also opened a new era of traditional Chinese realistic flower-and-bird paintings.In addition,it appears to different styles and diverse aesthetic needs,which completely stands for youthful spirit among contemporary people.Su Baijun is an outstanding painter in the field of contemporary traditional Chinese flower-and-bird paintings.His works are fresh,elegant and clean,with concise but not simple pictures.His works are full of respect and love for life.Su Baijun attaches great importance to painting and sketching from nature,who is good at observation and contemplation,and advocates for giving colors according to "artistic conception".In his realm of flowers and birds,the object color can be changed with painter’s mood.Moreover,any simple color has its spiritual connotation to some extent.During author’s graduate study,the author predominantly had a study on Su Baijun’s painting styles and techniques.On the basis of a large number of literature and materials,the author makes a further analysis on Su’s artistic background,painting characteristics,painting techniques and the influence of his works on modern and contemporary traditional Chinese flower-and-bird paintings.According to this study,this dissertation has a systematic analysis on the causes of his painting styles,painting characteristics at different stages and the influence on the author’s paintings.The article is divided into four parts as follows: The first chapter illustrates Su Baijun’s artistic background,good family education and beautiful living environment,which lays a sound foundation for his painting works.Chapter two and three plays a significantly crucial role in this dissertation.The second chapter is divided into two parts.The first part elaborates the evolution of Su’s painting styles,which differ remarkably in different stages.The second partsystematically expounds the characteristics of his painting styles.While third chapter has a discussion on the expressive techniques of his traditional Chinese realistic flower-and-bird paintings respectively from four aspects such as the composition,lines,colors and techniques.The fourth chapter presents the author’s artistic practice,and shows how to combine new painting knowledges and new painting techniques learned in his works with the author’s paintings. |
