Writing teaching is one of the important teaching tasks in high school English.Using cohesion devices to organize language in writing can make the article more fluent and coherent.Therefore,teachers should pay attention to the guidance of students’ cohesive devices means in writing,and improve the quality of composition by strengthening students’ cohesiveness.Based on this,this study will use Halliday and Hasan’s discourse cohesion theory as the theoretical basis,understand the use of cohesive devices in students’ English compositions and analyze the cohesive errors in the composition,which try to provide reference and advice for English writing teaching.Under the guidance of cohesion theory and error analysis theory,this study uses the method of literature research,data statistics and text analysis to analyze the written expressions of three monthly examinations of 100 students in class 5 and 6 of the first grade of Yan’an Middle School.By analyzing the use of the cohesive devices of high school students in English writing,as well as the mistakes students make when using five cohesive devices of reference,substitution,omission,connection and lexical cohesion,draws the following conclusions:High school students in English writing mainly use lexical cohesion and reference,as well as conjunction.First of all,in the use of reference,first person is used more frequently,but here also are many common mistakes.The errors occurred mainly in four aspects: the misuse of reference,ambiguous reference,lack of reference,and excessive use of definite articles.Secondly,in the use of lexical cohesion,students tends to use simple repetition,but the influence of Chinese thinking leads to a larger proportion of collation mistakes.In addition,high school students’ awareness of usingconjunctions in English writing is not strong,and few students use them.There are also many errors after using.These errors are mainly in three aspects:the misuse of conjunctions,excessive use of conjunctions and zero conjunction.The final analysis shows that high school students can’t master and use the omission and substitution methods well in writing.They don’t even know how to use omission and substitution,which makes the article too embarrassing and not concise.Therefore,in order to improve the quality of writing,students need to master all kinds of cohesive devices.Teachers should also pay attention to the guidance of cohesive devices in English writing teaching and cultivate students’ awareness of using cohesive devices in English writing.
