Game teaching is a very important teaching strategy in primary school English teaching and has been widely adopted.Game teaching can not only improve students' attention to learning, stimulate interest in learning, and enable students to actively participate in teaching. Moreover, while improving students' ability to use English, game teaching cultivates students' sense of teamwork, rules and competition. However,in the implementation process of game teaching, there are many imperfections, which directly affect the effect of game teaching. The author hopes to find out the principles that should be followed in the design of game teaching in English class at primary schools through this research, sum up the common problems in the practice of game teaching, and find ways to solve the corresponding problems to help more primary school English teachers to adopt game teaching more effectively in teaching practice, and make game teaching a more mature teaching method in English class.Based on the classical theory of Frobel's game theory and Piaget's cognitive development theory, the author refers to the relevant research results published by researchers and frontline teachers in recent years, combined with the author's teaching research practice, carried out the research by focusing on the following three questions:(1)What principles should be followed in the practice of game teaching in English class at primary schools?(2)What problems are likely to occur in the practice of game teaching in English class at primary schools? and(3)What are the solutions to these problems? In the research, the author employed literature review, interviews and other research methodologies to summarize the principles that should be followed in the design of game teaching in English class at primary schools:(1)being purposeful;(2)being innovative;(3)being adequate;(4)being effective.Following the above principles, the author conducted teaching practice for a semester in Class 1 of Grade 3 of the Foreign Language Experimental Primary School in Guanshanhu District,Guiyang City.Classroom observations, teachers' interviews and questionnaires were adopted to explore common problems in game teaching in English class at primary schools. The problems are categorized as:(1)the lack of interestingness or lack of instructiveness in game teaching;(2)the inappropriate use of classroom instruction or classroom expressions by teachers;(3)the complexity of the rules of the game;(4)the lack of maximized class participation;and(5)the practice of game activities is unfair. In response to these problems, after the author observed the improved game teaching practice, and submitted the questions to the English Teaching and Research Group of the Foreign Language Experimental Primary School for discussion and summary, the proposed solutions to the above problems are as follows:(1)design games according to the teaching objectives, and always choose the games that demands the participation of whole class;(2)introduce rules in a simple way,in either English or Chinese, and illustrate by teacher if necessary;(3)create game-friendly environment for students;(4)always use positive expressions in class to encourage students' participation;(5)divide groups with the purpose of increasing diversities of students;(6)monitor the whole class, not only the ones who are playing, and be prepared for surprises;(7)after games, review, award and punishment should be done timely;and(8)create learning and competition environment after class at school. With above findings and proposed solutions, the significance of this research would be concluded as that with proper integration of games in English teaching, teaching methodology is perfected, teachers' comprehensive capability is improved, and students' interest in English learning is stimulated.Nevertheless,it is necessary to point out that this research is not perfect for at least the limitation of both the author being a full-time primary school teacher without much professional research experience, and the chosen research objectives being limited to a sample class at a Guiyang primary school which is not representing the big image of the country.
