London Fields centers on a mystery murder in a society endangered by nuclear threats and ecological catastrophes.Referring to the theory of detective fiction and relevant postmodernist literary theories, the present author of this thesis aims to explore Amis' s application and subversion of detective formulas.Incorporating elements of fantasies, pornography and metafiction within the frame of detective fiction,Amis creates a wayward style of hybrid detective fiction that is inverted and centers on “whydunit”,instead of “whodunit”,betraying his postmodernist ponderings, which leads him to wonder into a boundless abyss defying interpretation. The present author argues that Amis, despite of his postmodernist tricks, betrays his concern for social reality, his observations of which are strikingly prophetic.Combining realism with avant-gardism,London Fields shows that postmodern literature that is generally regarded ideologically nonchalant may subtly convey concerns for social advancement.
