White is an Australian writer with distinctive creative characteristics. In his creation,he successfully combined the Western modernist technique with the reality of Australia, which made his novel have both Australian customs and distinctive modernist characteristics. In the days of White's life, existentialism was in vogue.White also called himself an existentialist in his autobiography. Most of the characters in his novels are trapped in some kind of dilemma, hopeless but still struggling, eager to get free. This paper focuses on the formation of White's existentialist thought, the existentialist theme of his novel and the creative techniques adapted to the theme. The first chapter analyzes the relationship between White and existentialism, and probes into the origin of White's existentialism.White is a humanitarian writer as well as an existentialist writer.White's existentialism thought is inextricably related to his life experience. The second chapter takes White's novel text as the research object and Sartre's existentialism theory as the theoretical basis to explore the existentialism thought in his works.White's novels discuss existential literary themes such as alienation, solitude, absurdity and so on.In White's novels, alienation is the normal condition that one lives in the world;solitude is a kind of self-insistence,not clinging to the common world;absurdity is a struggle against the meaningless world. The third chapter focuses on the analysis of irony and stream of consciousness, which are close to the theme of existentialism.Through the stream of consciousness, the real feelings of the characters can be intuitively reflected, but also reflect the living conditions of the characters.Through irony,we can see White's attitude towards survival in hiding his novel.White's novel, though obscure and tragic, expresses a positive philosophical attitude towards life.White's works focus on the inner world of ordinary people and deeply explore the spiritual world of human beings. His view of existence expressed in his novels is still instructive to the survival dilemma of contemporary people.
